About This Blog

I know that there are others who have attempted and completed a camper renovation project such as this. I would love to know your thoughts and ideas. Maybe you came across some of the same issues that I might be stumped on, maybe you know a great place to get parts. Or you're part of a camper forum with like minded people. I would LOVE to meet you (here online of course), please feel free to email me, or leave your email in my comments so that I can contact you.

Spring = More Camper Renovations

It's pretty much been a year since I last wrote, well not quite, but it's been a while. We got some great camping in last year, even as late as the third weekend in October. The weather was good, and the campground we fell in love with stayed open later than Columbus day.

Well the weather's finally broke, and we're actually getting spring time weather. And with that means there's more work to do to the camper. Over the winter I gathered a few things to button up the front bed area, and came up with plans to nix the counter and actually add in a short bench with storage underneath.

To replace the plastic drawers under the bed I got a dresser to cut down to add real drawers. With that I'm also dropping the bed a good four inches in hopes the headboard will be just that, and not level with the mattress like it was last year. I'm also finishing off the headboard so it will be usable storage this year.

Also in that area I did manage to find the leak at the corner of the window at the new headboard. Its a shame, I had to open up a piece of the new wall to find it. But after 20 min and a hose spilling water to specific areas I Finally found the culprit. It's coming from the front left corner at the trim.

Another thing I managed to fix is where the wall board on the right hand side came together. When I first put it up I had missed the stud attaching it under the window. This caused the wall board to flex more at that spot. So I pulled the wall board back, added an extension piece inside the wall to the stud so I could secure the edge of the board. No flexing and I was able to fill the seem without cracks.

Speaking of filling the seams. From the movement and flexing of the camper on our new england pot holed roads, regular spackle and wood filler crack. I spent the last two days filling the seams with flexible vinyl paintable caulk. So far so good. I've got it smooth, just waiting to see how it looks painted.

So back to the new bench/couch. It was a huge dilemma when the idea dawned on me. I went into design mode and felt compelled to draw up renderings to make a decision. Bench - Counter - or Both. The line of the week was. To Bench or Not To Bench, That is the Question.
Here's my renderings (crudely done on an Iphone at 3am)
   (Just bench)

     (Bench w counter down)

     (Bench with counter up)

After the renderings I we t out and did some measurements. Measurements of what was there, measurements of actual modern campers. -don't ask where the bench idea came from- When said and done it was the measurements of the floor to window bottom that made the decision. The counter would be scrapped. It just wouldn't work with the low window and the wheel well. And even a flip up counter wouldn't work because there was only enough space on top of the bench to have a 9" counter.  So couch it is.  I managed to find a 12" wide base cabinet with drawer for storage to the left of the bench. I had already bought drawers for a counter space by the drawer. I realize storage is important in a small camper. Every inch counts. I'm hoping to finish the bench and storage this week. We still need to replace the rotted wood by the door and re-seal the door frame so the new bench will not be permanently attached yet. But we do have a deadline for it to be functional for a week of camping in June.
